Extraction of low molecular weight polyhydroxyalkanoates from mixed microbial cultures using bio-based solvents

(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) obtained from waste/wastewater using a mixed microbial culture (MMC) usually varies in its properties due to daily variation the composition applied as feedstock. In current study, average molecular weight (MW) of PHBV was purposely reduced about 1 MDa 200 kDa by drying PHBV-rich biomass at elevated temperature 120 °C for 18 h ease extraction and handling. Furthermore, conversion into value-added chemicals such trans-crotonic acid (trans-CA) trans-2-pentenoic (2-PA) thermal decomposition (pyrolysis) benefits lower MW. For low MW PHBV, use bio-based solvents 2-methyltetrahydroxyfuran (2-MTHF) dihydrolevoglucosenone (cyrene) studied. The maximum yield 62 ± 3 % with purity > 99 achieved 2-MTHF 80 an hour high solvent ratio 5 (g/mL). Cyrene-based extractions resulted highest 57 2 (g/mL) ratio. mass balance closure over process indicated that 15 10 polymer has remained residual after cyrene, respectively. performance these new extract polymers various compared benchmark chloroform dimethyl carbonate (DMC).
